The Works of Jonathan Edwards, Volume One (vii.ii.i):

"Here it may be inquired, what the affections of the mind are?—I answer, The affections are no other, than the more vigorous and sensible exercises of the inclination and will of the soul."

At what point in time did our inclinations (our expressions of our minds, hearts, etc) seem to become something worldly? We must attempt to escape the shackles of modernism and seek to purify ourselves, not deny ourselves. To do otherwise denies the respect that our God-given humanity deserves. For example,
Do not shun enjoyment, but prune it to find true appreciation.
Sexual enjoyment is not under the authority of the world unless we allow them to pervert God's gift to us.
Remember your weakness and practice discernment, not judgement.
At the same time, we must guard each other, for "It is by the mixture of counterfeit religion with true, not discerned and distinguished, that the devil has had his greatest advantage against the cause and kingdom of Christ."
