It seems that early church (late second century) baptisms were not for the faint of heart.
I've an idea, though, to bring our modern baptisms up to snuff. We'll simply make our locale a little more natural (a la John the Baptist) and change the date of our baptisms to Jan 1: instant Polar-Bear-Club-style baptisms.
